Tallinn University now has a technology-supported learning and teaching research laboratory, EDUSPACE. At the official opening event on the 25th of September, the lab team introduced to research and application projects in the field of educational innovation, which is aimed at different levels of education.
The EDUSPACE research laboratory is aimed primarily at researchers, lecturers, students, but also at the same time for companies and teachers, offering modern opportunities for research and development in the field of education, as well as, for example, product development projects for enterprises of educational technology. The laboratory is equipped with modern research and educational technology equipment.
In collaboration with university researchers, the EDUSPACE research laboratory aims to provide partnerships with educational technology companies to jointly develop effective science- and evidence-based educational innovation materials and products. Teachers and educational technologists are also welcome to the laboratory to create and test new teaching materials and methods. Teachers need reliable and science-based evidence in their work that their teaching practices are justified and effective. The research laboratory, in cooperation with researchers from Tallinn University, offers opportunities for teachers to test their teaching methods and get scientific proof.
“This is a good example where the various goals of the university – research-based, society-oriented through multi-faceted practice, multi-faceted cooperation and partnership – have been successfully integrated and implemented,” says Katrin Niglas, Vice-Rector for Research at Tallinn University.
The opening event of the EDUSPACE laboratory also marks the end of a five-year project by the international research group CEITER, whose research has focused on evidence-based educational innovation. The new research laboratory has created a good basis for the continuation and further development of the activities that grew out of the project.

According to Professor Tobias Ley, the head of the Center of Excellence for Educational Innovation at Tallinn University, the establishment of the laboratory is based on years of hard work and the contribution of many researchers.
“The EDUSPACE research laboratory was established in cooperation with the international research group of the TLU ERA Chair CEITER, whose important work direction, the EDULAB model, which is based on the co-operation methodology, forms the ground for educational innovation together with creating the necessary conditions. In addition to physical equipment, the research laboratory also brings together know-how for the sustainable and evidence-based implementation of innovations,” introduced Professor Tobias Ley.
